Government's Wildlife Promise Good News for Roswell Pits2.39.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 23rd May 2010
Liberal Democrats are cautiously optimistic that Ely's Roswell Pits and other wildlife areas under threat could be protected following the coalition government's promise to introduce new measures. They claim the coalition pledge to "protect wildlife and promote green spaces and wildlife corridors in order to halt the loss of habitats and restore biodiversity" is a step in the right direction. Sue Austen, who represents Ely West said: "This is an extremely welcome move. Although we haven't got the finer detail of this proposal, it is encouraging to see that the new coalition government has made this promise. "Any new measures by the government which could give greater power of protection over Roswell Pits to ensure its survival would be very worthwhile. It is crucial that we protect our natural habitats so that wildlife can flourish and people can enjoy these areas of unspoilt countryside." The new coalition agreement also includes a promise to launch a national tree planting campaign.
