No need for Congestion Charge speculation

5.20.28pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 9th Oct 2008

The possibility that a two zone Cambridge with a maximum £8 congestion charge is under consideration has been refuted by a number of councillors from across the political spectrum.

Liberal Democrat Transport Spokes, County Councillor Alex Reid comments, 'This option, of a cordon system which could cost up to £8 a day needs to be evaluated, like all other options - against a well thought out list of objectives.'

'We suggest that the three main objectives are that a congestion charge should achieve sufficient congestion and CO2 reduction, that it should be fair (in the sense that those who cause congestion and pollution should pay for it) and should impose the minimum overall cost on the community.'

'The double cordon option seems likely to perform badly in terms of all three objectives.'
