Should standing come back to football ask Liberal Democrats6.48.04pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 2nd Sep 2008 Liberal Democrats will debate safe standing in football grounds at their autumn party conference which starts on Saturday September 13 and Jonathan Chatfield their parliamentary spokesperson for South East Cambridgeshire and avid Histon supporter will be there giving his backing to safe standing areas as well as seated enclosures. Jonathan Chatfield said: "I like many other football fans would like to be able to stand whilst supporting my side. "Lib Dems are immensely proud of football in this country, and the fans are an integral part of what makes our leagues the most popular in the world. "Like everyone else, we want the atmosphere in grounds to be as good as possible. "Technology has improved considerably in recent years - Germany is a good example which demonstrates that if organised properly, standing at football matches can be a safe and enjoyable experience. "During any debate that we have we must be clear - if safe standing is less safe than seating, then it cannot be allowed. Our primary concern must ultimately be the safety of all football fans. "We want to listen to the views and concerns of all those affected, because we believe that the law should reflect what's really best for football fans. "I feel what we need are standing parts of the ground, as well as seated family enclosures. "If you are a football fan and want to let me have your view before our conference in September please contact me through our website - www.secambslibdems.co.uk"
