Poll Reveals 1 in 5 Tory MPs In Denial on Climate Change

2.48.31pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 2nd Aug 2008

One in five Tory MPs do not believe climate change is linked to human activity and two thirds say it should not be a priority for local councils according to a poll conducted by ComRes.

Liberal Democrats point to the poll to show that the Conservatives are the least concerned about climate change.

Jonathan Chatfield the Lib Dem spokesperson for South East Cambridgeshire said:

"The poll, which was conducted in April but which has only just come to light, shows that in Parliament Tory MPs are the least likely to take climate change seriously.

"Nearly a third of them do not agree to people receiving a financial incentive such as a loft insulation grant and nearly half disagree with councils forcing people to take action on climate change.

"Climate change and the environment is clearly not at the heart of Tory thinking, which is incredible given the overwhelming evidence there is now that human activity is having a detrimental impact on all life on the planet.

"Clearly the leopard hasn't changed its spots, it's just hiding itself behind an oak tree."
