Danger Junction: Action at Last; But Double U-Turn on Speed Limits7.48.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 7th Jan 2008 The County Council has finally bowed to public pressure - and agreed to construct the new right turn and pedestrian refuge at Alington Terrace on the A1307. County Councillor John Batchelor welcomed the news but deplored the long delay. "I know money is tight - but if the Council managed its finances better, there would be more money available for important services like road safety. If we didn't have to wait so long for those improvements, lives might have been saved. Even now, it could be another year before work starts. So please take special care on this stretch of the road. Ironically, the long-promised cycle racks for students and other people picking up the bus to Cambridge have just been installed here. Now we need a safe crossing as well." When the A1307 speed review results were first announced, it looked bad for our area. It backed lower limits on the Linton by-pass but no change from there on to Haverhill. But John Batchelor challenged the review's conclusions and asked for the data to be checked again. The checks revealed that mistakes had been made. Suddenly the Highways people said we could have lower speed limits after all. John then asked at a County Council meeting where the money to implement the changes would be coming from. The answer? "The is no money." That means it will have to go through the process of bids, priorities and repeated meetings. But John will keep fighting our corner, just as he did over Alington Terrace.
