Local MP should put public transport before road building

By calling for the dualling of the A10 to support the development of Angel Drove Jim Paice MP risks playing into the hands of the Mereham developer and flies in the face of tackling global warming claim Liberal Democrats, responding to the MP's calls for more roads around Ely .

Jonathan Chatfield the Lib Dems' Parliamentary spokesperson said:

"Mr Paice obviously still lives in the world of thirty years ago when it was thought that the only solution to meet demand for travel was to build more roads.

"Even the last Tory Government realised that more roads just produced more traffic and more pollution.

"Today, road transport accounts for a quarter of the country's CO2 emissions. Has Mr Paice caught up with global warming?

"What is needed for Ely first and foremost is a good public transport network which ensures people don't have to drive along the A10, so that we don't have to dual it.

"Limited road capacity is a significant factor in rejecting the Mereham development. So dualling the A10 plays right into the hands of this or any future developer that has eyes on the Cambridge-Ely corridor."
