Sustainability Failure 'Bitterly Disappointing'

6.59.29pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 1st Nov 2007

Cambridgeshire County Council is still failing to take sustainability seriously, Liberal Democrats have said.

County Councillor Alex Reid, who has been pushing for higher energy efficiency standards in new county council buildings for some time, was disappointed that latest County Council rules on school design ignore the school's effect on the environment. Councillor Reid commented:

"Cambridgeshire's growth means that we will see many new schools being built over the next few years. This is a great chance to match fine words on climate change to real action.

"It is bitterly disappointing that there is no mention of sustainability in the principles for school design discussed by the County Council. Investment now in energy efficiency and sustainable design will save schools money for many years to come.

"Schools are very public buildings and so they present a special opportunity to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of sustainable technologies."
