Councillor Condemns Lights Delay

5.55.58pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 16th Oct 2007

A local councillor has criticised electricity company EDF for leaving part of Brooklands Avenue in darkness for over a week.

A fault in the electrical cable has left several street lights in Brooklands Avenue without power. The road forms part of Cambridge's inner ring road and is an important cycle route to Cambridge Station. Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Trumpington, Anne Kent, has been pushing for the repairs to be made immediately. She commented:

"It is unacceptable that it should take so long to restore light to an important route like this. Many cyclists use Brooklands Avenue to travel to the station but with the large trees along the road and the streetlights out of action, it is extremely dark and dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians.

"The County Council should make sure that electricity companies respond quickly in areas like this, within 24 hours if necessary.

"EDF's delays are putting cyclists and pedestrians in danger."
