Post Offices under threat9.42.39pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 17th Apr 2007 Liberal Democrats in East Cambridgeshire have reacted with outrage at Government plans to close 2,500 Post Offices.
Bottisham campaigner Christine Bryant said, "Under the last Conservative Government 3,500 Post Offices were closed, and Labour have continued this record." Post Offices are vital in rural areas "Post Offices are a vital community facility, particularly in rural areas, and the Government shouldn't just decide to close Post Office regardless of the feelings of people like us in Bottisham." Government rules say that everyone must be within three miles of a Post Office as the crow flies, but this comes as small consolation to those without transport, or who have to rely on public transport. In this round of closures, Post Offices will be closed for 'strategic reasons' - not just where the sub-postmaster wants to retire.
