As Lib Dems we are proud of our record on civil liberties.

But we have effective policies to cut crime too.

As Menzies Campbell said recently: "To fight crime effectively we don't need to get tougher, we need to get smarter."

An approach based on what works, not on what sounds good, is the best way to cut crime.

Liberal Democrat-run councils have already shown how to cut crime in their areas.
