Conservative County Council cash crisis forces huge cuts

7.55.30pm GMT Tue 12th Dec 2006

The Conservative County Council has been forced to reveal that it must make £2.8million of cuts to services in order to balance the books.

The cuts, which must be made because of over-spending, were only released to the public after pressure from Liberal Democrats on the Council.

County Councillor David Jenkins said "The Conservatives like to portray themselves as the party to trust with your money, but yet again they are having to make huge cuts mid-year, without proper consultation."

The cuts include:

£1.3million in cuts will have to be made to social services.

The County Council may not be able to afford to complete the painting of yellow lines at the blind bend on Station Road in Histon

£500,000 to be cut from the Highways budget, meaning that traffic improvements like yellow lines will no longer take place.

£100,000 from the book-fund meaning that libraries cannot replenish their stocks.
