Liberal Democrats demand action on over 90 outstanding issues with Ely 'new' estates

12.34.14pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 28th Oct 2006

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Ely South and West have taken action on the multitude of problems that remain with the 'new' estates on the outskirts of Ely.

Cllrs Jeremy Friend-Smith and Simon Higginson asked officers to present a report to the Council's Planning Committee that detailed over 90 outstanding issues and problems with the developments.

These included the long-running problems with road surfacing, play areas that remain locked, lack of cycle-paths and many more.

Cllr Simon Higginson said "It is unacceptable that so many of these issues are still unresolved after building stopped on many of these developments two years ago. We will be pushing the District and County Council to resolve these issues as quickly as possible."

Some of the problems include…

Paths to 'nowhere'

The path from Alexander Chase should enter a landscaped woodland but just stops! Work is due to start to complete this in autumn 2007. Many of the pavements appear to just stop, including outside number 132 Columbine Road and at number 122b St Johns Road.

Road surfacing finally begins

Cllr Simon Higginson has been assured that the surfacing of Beresford Road will be complete by autumn 2006. This comes as small comfort to residents who have been waiting two years for this to be completed!

Open spaces unfinished

The public open space at Stour Green has still not been laid out and trees have not been planted. The public open space at Beresford Road is still not completed. There are still benches, bollards and dog bins that should have been installed.

Street lighting still not working

Residents of Beresford Road, Brooke Grove, Collier Close and Darwin Close have contacted us about street-lighting that is still not working. This remains the responsibility of the developer until the roads have been formally adopted.
