Lib Dems try to save Ely's historic green space from Conservative car park plans

7.09.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 7th Jun 2006

Conservatives on East Cambs District Council are refusing to bow to overwhelming public opinion against their plans to build a car park extension on an area of historic meadow adjacent to Ely Cathedral.

Liberal Democrat Councillors originally defeated the plans at full Council but the Conservatives refused to accept the outcome and are still trying to push the plans through.

District Councillor Nigel Bell said "Liberal Democrat councillors will fight this vandalism all the way. The historic green space in the centre of Ely is essential to the character of the city."

A recent Ely Standard poll found that 92% of respondents were against the plans.

To fund the plans the Conservatives will close the Cresswells Lane car park, meaning that there will actually be 20 fewer car parking spaces in the City than before.
