Tories Prune Ely In Bloom to Save Cash

January 18, 2010 6:20 PM

Ely in Bloom founder, Sheila Friend-Smith has expressed her anger and bitter disappointment at the Tory's plan to cut half its contribution to the competition.

She said the decision has not been thought through and attacks the very heart of community spirit in Ely.

"This competition brings together the whole community - businesses, individuals, schools, organisations and voluntary groups - who take a pride in their city," she said. "It demonstrates sustainability through planting and recycling and shows off the cleanliness and smartness of our city.

"Residents, visitors and tourists alike benefit from this effort and Ely in Bloom has become something of which we are all extremely proud.

"The Ely in Bloom volunteers make a huge difference to the appearance of our city by providing colour throughout the year. Visitors to Ely often comment on the floral displays and we know that our residents appreciate our efforts.

"If it can't come from the grants' pot surely the tourism budget could recognise Ely in Bloom's contribution and provide a similar grant."

Ely has prided itself on its success in the Anglia in Bloom competition, securing many awards over the years including a highly prized Silver Gilt in 2009.
