Liberal Democrats are leading the fight against a massive concrete crusher planned close to businesses and homes in Witchford.
They fear the giant plant, on the Cambridgeshire County Council highways depot, will bring noise, dust and vibration for homeowners and workers.
High-tech machinery used by companies on the nearby Lancaster Way Business Park will be affected by the dust, and the vibration will upset sensitive machine settings, they claim.
"This is a disaster," said Ely South and West County Councillor Sue Austen. "Businesses are worried.
"We are trying to get high profile companies to invest in the area and this could prevent them from coming.
"This plant will bring major problems for companies trying to run their businesses and people living nearby. It must not be allowed to happen and we will fight it all the way."
Liberal Democrats are asking whether alternative sites have been considered. They claim the crusher would be better sited at the Grunty Fen landfill site which has been granted an 18 year extension.
There is also a site at Sutton, allocated for industrial waste disposal, which could be considered, they say.
Ely South Councillor Jeremy Friend-Smith said: "There has been no consideration of the impact this proposal will have on people living near the site and businesses.
"They can look forward to major disruption and this could drive businesses away from the area. There has to be a better site for this and we will do everything in our power to keep it out of Witchford."
Residents and business people can have their say at a National Customer Service Week roadshow taking place at Tesco, Ely on Tuesday, October 6.
