Nigel Bell, Liberal Democrat County Councillor and vice chair of Environment and Community Services Scrutiny, has asked that the Council's gritting performance during the recent spell of bad weather be scrutinised at the meeting on March 25th.
Cllr Bell said: 'There have been many stories in the press about problems such as our gritting regime not being as comprehensive as it should have been, with complaints from motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. We need to conduct a review, of what went right and what went wrong, while it is fresh in people's minds. I should also like any review to include consideration being given to reducing the potential damage done to the environment from the introduction of large quantities of salt."
Cllr David Jenkins, Lib Dem group leader agrees. He said: 'with climate change a real phenomenon now we can expect more extreme weather so this winter's snow may well be normal in years to come. We need to learn how to cope and prepare for the next time'.
In order to get maximum relevant input to the scrutiny process Cambridgeshire Lib Dems have launched a web-site http://cambridgeshiregrit.wordpress.com/ and have invited residents to post their experiences on-line.
