Lib Dems have called on Cambridgeshire County Council and South Cambs District Council to offer a local number alternative to their 0845 contact numbers.
Nichola Harrison, Lib Dem growth and resources spoke on the County Council said: 'these numbers once had a value but now with the increasing use of mobile phones and landline packages which offer free local calls they are a more expensive option. We raised this issue over 2 years ago and nothing has been done. It's time the Council thought about the costs which residents incur when they need to contact it.'
Sebastian Kindersley, Lib Dem leader on South Cambs District Council agreed; 'often it's the people who need to contact the Council who have money problems. Making them pay over the odds for the privilege is ridiculous. The local number alternative should be offered immediately and advertised on the web-site.'
Local numbers do exist for residents to contact both councils. They, and other alternatives to 0845 and 0870 numbers, can be found at www.saynoto0870.com. The numbers are 0345 045 5222 for the County Council and 01954 713000 for South Cambs.
