Energy suppliers must play fair

January 2, 2009 1:54 PM

Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats have joined the chorus of criticism against the major energy companies who still increase their tariffs and refuse to lower them - at a time when wholesale gas and electricity costs are falling and seek the Regulator's intervention.

Communities spokesman Geoff Heathcock said: 'Its absolutely appalling at a time when thousands are dealing with zero temperatures and struggling to pay fuel bills; these big guys like Eon refuse to pass on the lower prices. They are printing money for their shareholders and clobbering the poorest in our communities, OfGen should step in and hit these greedy companies if they continue to ignore the needs of their customers'

Cllr Heathcock continued: 'This is a market where there are dominant suppliers and where customers, although they can switch, have little real choice. That's why we have a regulator and it needs to be visible and to ensure that process can go down as quickly as they went up.'
