In a declaration that took place just before midnight, Fiona Whelan, the Liberal Democrat candidate was elected as the new Cambridgeshire County Councillor for the Hardwick Division. This is the second Lib Dem gain from the Conservatives in seven days, following their loss of the Teversham seat on South Cambridgeshire District Council to Lib Dem Frances Amrani last week.
Lib Dem Campaign Manager, Martin Land, comments: "This was a very hard fought campaign. We won because we had an excellent candidate in Fiona Whelan and because we stuck to our policies and principles throughout the campaign. We won the election on a strong swing, one which if it were repeated next June would result in the Tories losing the County Council."
"Fiona has promised to work hard for the 10 villages that make up the division and to work closely with local District and Parish councillors."
Fiona adds, "I want to thank all my team. I would also like to thank the staff of South Cambridgeshire District Council who ran an excellent polling day operation."
"But above all, I want to thank the people of our villages for the confidence they have expressed in me and I will do my very best to represent them and their interests."
Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Cambridgeshire County Council, David Jenkins, commented, "Fiona will make a great addition to our group on the County Council . Echoing her campaign theme, she is 'Local. Experienced. Enthusiastic.' and will be a strong, campaigning councillor for the Hardwick Division."
