Lib Dem County Councillor David Jenkins led the very first Councillor Call for Action in Cambridgeshire when he advised and supported local residents in their concern over the failure of the County Council to implement its decision, first made in 2006, to ensure that Longstanton Road in Oakington is closed to the majority of vehicles
The Call for Action provided the opportunity for local residents and the cross party scrutiny committee to raise the issue with highways officers and the appropriate cabinet member. The committee was critical of the council's performance and officers have now offered to discuss how this project can now be moved forward with the Parish Council.
The minutes of the meeting say: 'The officer accepted the criticism, and both the Committee and Councillor Brown apologised on behalf of the Council.'
Use of the road between Longstanton and Oakington is restricted to a limited number of motor vehicles, but it has increasingly become a commuter route for which it was neither designed nor built. In recent years, the high numbers of vehicles illegally using the route has made the road dangerous for walkers, cyclists and horse riders , who have traditionally used the road for recreational purposes. Limiting the numbers of cars will enable local residents to once again enjoy the pleasure of walking, cycling and horse riding along the one mile of road, undisturbed by speeding vehicles.
Local county Councillor David Jenkins said that he was pleased by the result but pointed out that there are several similar projects which have been supported but not yet delivered. However he cautioned: 'money is tight and financing such schemes will not be easy. However if we can engineer a dialogue between the county and local councils we might be able to find a way through.'
