Cambridgeshire Lib Dems welcome abolition of national testing at 14
Cambs Lib Dems have welcomed the government's announcement that pupils in Year 9 will no longer have to sit national standard assessment tests (SATS) at the age of 14.
Cambs Lib Dem Education Spokesman, Peter Downes, said:
'This is a long overdue reform. The 14+ SATS at the end of Key Stage 3 are a waste of time and money. They have distorted teaching in secondary schools and put pupils and teachers under unnecessary pressure.
Central government has been excessively directive for far too long. Teachers will obviously test children informally and report to parents, as they always have done.'
The government has been forced to take this measure as a result of the fiasco of marking the SATs earlier this year when thousands of papers were unmarked, delayed or incorrectly assessed.
'English school children undergo more formal testing than anybody else in the entire world but it doesn't make them top of the league on international measures.'
