Ely North & East County Councillor Nigel Bell has joined with Lib Dems across the county in calling for more 20mph speed limits in our residential streets.
Nigel recently visited Portsmouth to see successful city wide 20mph speed limits in action. The scheme covers all the city's residential streets with only the main road arteries still 30mph.
There are no physical measures, such as speed humps, but simply 20mph signs and a painted 20 in a circle on the road as you turn into any street off the main routes.
The total cost for the whole city was £475k, paid for by a government grant. By contrast the traffic calming around just Barton Square and Silver Street in Ely cost £250k.
Nigel Bell said "I was extremely impressed overall. The main thing to understand is that this has been a "cultural change" in the city rather than an "enforcement change". People are very supportive and it is largely self-policing. It has considerably improved the feel and character of the city. The draft Ely Transport Strategy contains provisions to potentially adopt a similar model in Ely and I will be campaigning to make sure this can be given the priority it deserves."
