'Alcohol is just another drug and its increasing abuse is causing serious problems in Cambridgeshire, for residents, the Police, Hospitals and Emergency Services,' comments Cambridgeshire Lib Dem spokesperson for Health, Cllr. Geoff Heathcock. 'We are backing calls from our Leader, Nick Clegg MP to call time on loss leading alcohol sales.'
Lib Dem County Officer and St Neots Town centre resident, Martin Land, adds, 'Disorder and nuisance due to alcohol abuse has been tackled recently in a series of campaigns from the police and other public bodies. However, these actions generally target pubs, not the supermarkets selling alcohol at irresponsible prices.'
Despite high levels of inflation in most food and drink items, the cost of alcohol has actually fallen over the past 12 months. Lager is now being sold in some supermarkets for as little as 52p per litre.
The Lib Dems are proposing that an independent board (with exemption under the Competition Act of 1998) is set up to make recommendations on minimum prices.
Nick Clegg commented, 'Alcohol related violence, disorder and illness is now one of the biggest problems we face. If supermarkets are not prepared to act responsibly it is time they are forced to do so.'
