News that the hospital bug Clostridium difficile is responsible for one in a 100 deaths in NHS English hospitals and nursing homes is shocking and preventable says local Lib Dem campaigner Jonathan Chatfield.
Figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that NHS deaths rates from the bug in 2005/6 were far higher than those in private and non NHS care.
In response Jonathan Chatfield the Lib Dem's parliamentary spokesperson for South East Cambridgeshire said:
"These figures are truly shocking and show that the Government has lost control of infections in our NHS hospitals and nursing homes.
"With NHS hospital infections causing one in every hundred deaths why has it taken so long for the Secretary of Health to realise the seriousness of the situation?
"Unlike their counterparts in the non NHS sectors, hard working NHS staff are up against enormous pressure to hit meaningless and often manipulated targets.
"Surely fighting infection has to come first and the NHS front line staff should be freed from current over the top Government interference."
