Campaigners to save Histon station are today celebrating a major victory.
Cambridgeshire County Council has finally acknowledged that the local community wants to keep the former station building and admitted that it is not necessary to demolish it in order to build the Guided Bus route.
Today's victory follows a major campaign by residents led by Pene Nudds from Impington. Pene said:
"This is the culmination of six months' hard work. We've had incredible support from the community and the owners of the station building site and the one adjacent to it."
County Councillor David Jenkins, who has supported the campaign throughout, is delighted but cautions realism:
"It's now down to the owner of the building and the planning authorities, South Cambridgeshire District Council and the parish councils, to come up with a development which meets their needs and those of the local community."
The building is owned by Ken and Elizabeth Hart who say that they've always wanted a solution which would allow the former station to be saved. Ken added:
"Now that the threat of arbitrary demolition has been put aside we can work together in a reasonable time frame and do what's right for all stakeholders."
