Cambridgeshire Lib Dems have called on the County Council to listen to residents over lower speed limits.
During discussions on the County Council's new speed limit policy at Full Council, Liberal Democrat councillors demanded that the Council listen to residents and make it easier for lower speed limits to be introduced.
County Councillor Alex Reid has been calling for this policy to be reviewed for some time and last year the Conservatives on the County Council voted against his motion to review speed limit policy with a view to introducing more extensive and lower speed limits. He commented:
"I am very pleased that the County Council has listened to some of our concerns in their new speed limit policy but there are still additional barriers to introducing the lower speed limits that some of our roads need.
"The often expensive traffic calming measures that this policy demands before the speed limit can be lowered will mean that many schemes will never be implemented because of budget constraints. We do need traffic calming in many areas in order to make the roads safe for pedestrians and residents but this should not be standing in the way of lower limits. Simply lowering the speed limit will, very cheaply, help lower the average speed and make the road safer for local residents.
"We should be listening to those who are most affected by high speed traffic through our towns and villages. The views of local residents and parish councils should be central to decision making on speed limits."
