New threat of Council office move

March 17, 2007 3:56 PM

Conservatives on the district council have announced their intention to 'review' repairs to the district council offices at the end of 2007.

East Cambs Councillors hold banners saying £14 million saved by not moving offices

Liberal Democrats and local people fought to stop extravagant Conservative plans to move the Council offices, which would cost £200 for every man, woman and child in the district.

Liberal Democrats suspect this is a signal that Conservatives will resurrect their plans to move the district council offices at a cost to taxpayers of over £14 million.

'Extravagant and wasteful' Liberal Democrat Group Leader Gareth Wilson said, "Repairing the existing Council building will cost much less than the extravagant and wasteful Conservative plans." £200 for every man, woman and child in the district.

Liberal Democrats and local people managed to defeat the outrageous Conservative plans just over a year ago, and persuaded the Conservatives to spend considerably less by refurbishing the existing building.

The initial cost of the plans was estimated at £7million, however, this soon escalated to over £14.5million.

Liberal Democrats will continue to fight against the resurrection of these wasteful plans.
