Histon and Impington have been left off the District Council's priority list of villages to achieve additional affordable housing.
District Councillor Jonathan Chatfield said "This is very disappointing as there is a severe shortage of affordable housing in the area. Many young people are being forced to leave the villages they grew up in due to rising house prices."
The shortage is so severe that some local residents have called for the Unwins site off Impington Lane to be used for affordable housing. This would help young people to take the first step on the property ladder without being forced to move away.
However, others have called for the site to be used for local employment purposes so that people can live and work within the two villages, rather than commuting elsewhere.

Liberal Democrats on the District Council will be pushing the Conservative/Independent administration to increase the amount of affordable housing available for residents across South Cambridgeshire.
