A move by Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats to attract councillors from a wide range of backgrounds is to be discussed publicly with a view to forming a county council policy.

The group has been invited by the Tory-led administration to produce a report increasing the diversity of elected members by holding a quarter of council meetings out of office hours and organising training in the evenings.

Angry Liberal Democrats have attacked Tory plans to spend £375,000 of developer's cash on promoting the Guided Bus while ignoring pedestrian safety and cycling improvements.

They say the promotional campaign for a service that is out of reach for many residents is "scandalous".

The move came in draft proposals for how to spend developer's contributions received by Cambridgeshire County Council for the Cambridge University North West site development.

A Lib-Dem campaign to reverse the decision to increase County councillor allowances by 25% is off to a flying start, having attracted over 1,000 signatures in only 5 days.
Over 600 people have signed the online petition, and the paper petition has so far attracted nearly 500 signatures.
Lib Dem group leader Kilian Bourke, who has put a motion to council to stop the increases, said: "The message I am getting back from people is clear: councillors cannot reasonably give themselves a 25% pay rise at a time of wage freezes, redundancies and cuts to council services."

Speaking to Lib Dems from around the region Kilian Bourke, Leader of Cambridgeshire Lib Dems, said: "I know that many of you work in local government and respect the work that councillors do in their communities; but I hope you will agree with me that a 25% pay rise when the council is laying off staff and freezing council tax is not acceptable."

Residents living around Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital are facing the growing problem of patients parking near their homes to avoid paying parking charges.

Cars lining the streets caused problems for a fire engine trying to reach an incident recently.

Worried councillors have been lobbying the Tory-run Cambridgeshire County Council calling for action; but despite the problems, it has failed to agree a parking review.

Leading Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats have welcomed the Dilnot Commission's report on long term care but fear that it may bring little improvement for the county's elderly and vulnerable.

The report recommends a cap on the amount people will have to spend on care and comes in the same week that the Tory-run Cambridgeshire County Council has had to explain mistakes that have left some families thousands of pounds out of pocket to pay for care.
